The Waking Dream

The surrealist game THE WAKING DREAM was submitted to me by surrealist ADSPOTA in February of 2002. Merci et bonne chance!

1. It is late at night, you are at a train station. The platform is deserted and silent. The humming of insects and the flickering of the overhead lights lull you into a false sense of security, and you pass into a deep sleep. You are drifting, gliding above the embankment shadows when you are startled by a naked winged man running down the station platform trying to take flight. He is carrying...

2. He stops, looks up, places it directly beneath you and continues on his journey. You pick it up as you hear the station master call your name. He passes you a letter that had been left for you twenty years earlier. It imparts information that would have altered the course of your life had you received it then. The contents of the letter reveals...

3. You thank him and depart. You are wandering for awhile when you come upon an abandoned railway car hidden in the woods adjacent to the station. As you approach and are able to observe it more clearly, you realize it is actually...

4. A recollection enters your mind. A memory of...

5. which gives you a sense that you have been here before. An inscription above the entrance reads...

6. You enter. The musty scent of sandalwood and burnt sienna linger in the air. As your eyes adjust to the darkness you realize you are standing in the center of a Venetian garden. The grass is covered by incredible multicolored feathers of the exotic birds hidden in the bushes. In the corner there is a clavichord sprouting trees and wings from between its strings and is nearly enveloped by vines. A woman sits motionless there, her waist length hair covered by locusts and vines that connect her to the interior if the clavichord. She stares blankly at a clock across the square. You notice it is three a.m. Several minutes pass and the clock hands do not move. You have an uneasy feeling that something dangerous has or is about to happen. What significance does three a.m. hold for you......

7. Three women enter our peripheral vision, each identically dressed in an elegant full-length black silk gown. You are taken by the oversized pink bow that holds their hair back in a strict braid. They face opposite directions, each looking into three mirrors located at the perimeter of the garden. As you follow their mesmeric gaze you see something unique in each of the mirrors. The first mirror reflects an image of the past...

8. The second, an image of the present...

9. The third, an image of the future...

10. You wish to leave this place, but see no way out. Simultaneously, without speaking, each woman telepathically offers you a way back to the waking world, but it can only be achieved by passing through one of the mirrors, but not without a cost. You will be changed perceptibly in some way. You have a choice to make. Which mirror do you choose, and why...

11. Several days have passed. Your waking life has been uneventful. You take a walk in the park and are amused by...

12. You are admiring the giant black swans on the burning lake when you are approached by a person you recognize, but can not make the connection. An introduction occurs. The person reveals themself to be...

13. They tell you they have been watching you for quite some time, feel a great affinity to you, in fact, are becoming more of you everyday. The only thing that has prevented them from becoming you is something you have in your possession. To complete the process you give them...

14. A transmigration takes place. You are changed. Where have you gone and what have you become...
